Skirlaugh kicked off the action with a quick try in the first set, however this was not to be a pattern for the rest of the game. Wyke then took up the ball with impressive dodging from Kieran, and a swift pass from Regan to Niam. Nathan took the ball, ran round the outside and through the defence, but didn’t quite score at this early stage of the game.
Wyke’s strong defence kept Skirlaugh out after the turnover, notably from Billy and Niam. As Wyke took up the ball again, there were fine drives from Sam, Regan and Nathan, then Niam pushed through to almost reach the line. Regan passed to William, who broke through the defence to open the scoring for Hull Wyke U7s.
Skirlaugh almost scored in the next set, but were kept out again by solid defence from the team, including Sam and William. Wyke took up the ball with runs from Nathan and Niam, but were kept away from line. Skirlaugh then pulled ahead with a skilful try down the side, in spite of strong tackles from Billy and Kieran.
At this point, Wyke’s play stepped up a gear, and Niam charged across for a try, following adept passing from Robbie to Billy, and from Regan to Nathan. Skirlaugh responded with fast running and offloading, but Wyke tackled successfully to keep the opposition from scoring, and the first half ended even at two tries each.
Wyke pulled ahead quickly as the second half commenced, with Billy scoring his first try of the game. This half saw tough tackling from Robbie, Will and Sam, impressive sprints from Billy, Nathan and Niam, and imroved passing across the squad. Sam broke through the defensive line, but was soon caught, and Wyke’s next try came from a player borrowed from the opposition, with the remaining points from Billy (x2), Nathan and a last from William.
The final score was 8 points to 3 in favour of Hull Wyke.
