This disappointing scoreline doesn’t reflect a brave and enthusiastic performance from Hull Wyke U7’s, against a clearly more experienced side.
East Hull’s opening try within the first minute of the game, took us by surprise and we never quite caught up. Regan Sullivan took in our first run, followed by Billy Fenby skipping through and an attempt from William Kynman to sprint down the side which took him into touch. Sam Lawson took the ball, followed by Robbie Bales and a final effort from Billy, thwarted by strong defence from East Hull.
After the turn-over, the opposition’s experience showed with quick ball play and good off-loads, although we kept them to the last tackle before they scored again.
Nathan Belcher and Niam O’Grady took the ball in the following set, and William’s dodging gained good ground, taking Regan to just short of the line. As Easts took the ball, our defence did not slow, with tough tackles from Kieran Masike, William and Robbie, but strong drives from the East Hull players led to a 3rd try.
The remainder of this half saw ground-making runs from Billy, Sam and Kieran and a great break from Niam. Our defence seemed to improve with brave tackling from Billy and Regan, and a great leg-grabber from Sam, but we remained unable to prevent further points and the scoreline at half time was 5 points to 0 in favour of East Hull.
Kieran took the ball in the second half and was brought down immediately, then further drives from Sam, Billy and Regan brought us near to the line. Later in the half, there was strong tackling from Morgan Taft, Billy and Sam, but further tries came through for East Hull - although at least two looked to be in touch. There were good runs from Nathan and Morgan and impressive dummy-half play from Joe Thomas, however our Under 7’s looked at times to be treading water trying to get through East Hull’s defence and we were unable to get onto the score board.
The final score was 9 points to 0 to East Hull.
