Tuesday 26th June 2012 – Festival at Hull Wyke

Game 1: Hull Wyke U8 Blues vs Beverley U8

Hull Wyke began the defence with Will, Tyler and Nathan charging in to block the opposition. As Wyke took the ball, Finley and Tom took drives. Sam passed out to Tyler and then Nathan made ground, handing to Will who almost got to the line.

Tackles followed from Jason, Sam, Finley and Tyler in the next defensive set. Then as the ball handed over, Billy charged straight through on the first drive to open the scoring for Wyke.

Strong defence continued from Finley, Morgan and Sam, with William holding his side safely as usual. As Wyke took up the attack, Finley and Nathan took in drives. Finley passed out to Tyler who steamed through the line to score again for Wyke just before the short break.

In the second half, Wyke again held on to their line, and then Morgan took in a run with an offload to Tyler culminating in his second try. The opposition were then clamped down by determined tackles from Will, Billy and Sam, in spite of some good dodging through from Beverly. Nathan took in a brilliant run, gaining some valuable ground. Will caught a great ball and then flew down the side to score and cement the victory.

As the game drew to a close, Beverley did not ever give up and took in a full length try to secure a point on the final scoreboard.

(The final score was 4 points to 1 in favour of Hull Wyke)

Game 2: Hull Wyke U8 Blues vs Cottingham Tigers U8

The second game, against a more experienced Cottingham side, was much tighter throughout. Wyke’s tackling was strong with Sam, Morgan, Liam and Tom charging in. Billy took in a great run down the side, Morgan made good ground and Nathan passed to Tyler who was blocked in spite of his wonderful dodging. The Wyke team tried more offloading in this game, with throw outs from both Nathan and Sam to Tyler.

Tackling continued from Billy, Will and Tyler, with some unbeatable diving at legs. Liam joined the fray, but Cottingham showed some impressive passing skills. As Wyke took the ball, Billy again made good ground, as did Finley, Tyler and Will who strived for the line. Finley almost got to the line, but was knocked into touch and the game ended with no score at half-time.

Charlie joined the game at half time to add some fresh legs. Liam took in a run, followed by Billy and Finley, but Wyke were struggling to gain any ground. The team moved the ball out well as Tyler passed out a super ball to Will, who flung it out again to Billy. Finally the scoring was opened with a long run from Billy who although held, had made enough ground for Tyler to pick up the ball, dodge through and score.

Wyke’s tackling never waned, with Will charging in again and again, but Cottingham broke through our defences to even the score, leaving the game to finish a draw.

(Hull Wyke Team: William Kynman, Nathan Belcher, Tyler Leighton, Billy Rex, Finley Rex, Liam Robinson, Morgan Taft, Samuel Lawson, Charlie Weaver, Thomas Hook, Jason Kay)
