Hull Wyke 8 ‘Blues’ vs Cottingham Tigers
In this first of tonight’s games, Hull Wyke Blues were evenly matched against a strong Cottingham Tigers team. Wyke began the attack with drives from Sam, Morgan and Finley, with a pass out to Will followed by his usual side step, almost reaching the line.
As Cottingham took the ball, their skilful passing could have confused our defence, but Nathan and Sam were straight in with strong tackles, and then Will forced the attacker into touch. Tyler took the ball, zig-zagging from side to side, then flinging it out to Nathan who dived over for the first try of the game, to Hull Wyke.
The remainder of this half saw strong tackles from all, notably Liam, Morgan, Owen and Tyler – who had no qualms about bringing down larger opposition. Drives from Sam, Morgan and Will gained enough ground for Billy to touch down again for Wyke, however Cottingham scored as the whistle went, in spite of our vain attemps to grab the player’s legs.
As the game resumed, Sam went off with an injury, and Cottingham immediately scooted for the line, taking us by surprise and evening the scoreline. Charlie, James, and Tyler all took in drives, and Will through out a great pass to Finley. Our next try came from Tyler who found invisible gaps to dive over the line. In the end, our resulting strong defence from players including Owen, James, Nathan and Billy just couldn’t quite prevent Cottingham from equalising, again just before the whistle.
Hull Wyke 8 ‘Blues’ vs Lambwath Lions
Although Lambwath scored with their first touch of the ball, this was not indicative of the rest of the game. Billy quickly evened the score line, set up by Sam’s great run for the line.
Our defence then stepped up quickly, as Will, Liam, Morgan and Sam tackled like demons, leaping and grabbing legs. Charlie took in a strong drive, followed by Morgan and Nathan, allowing Billy to easily push through for his second try of the match.
Lambwath ran strongly, stopped by Morgan and Nathan, but managing a try in the corner. This was immediately answered by Will’s try as he grabbed the ball and flew down the length of the pitch on the wing, leaving us just ahead at the break
Sam kicked off the second half with a decent run, though it ended with his feet in touch. Finley pushed through and Nathan scored for us again, giving us a two point advantage. Lambwath answered with another try in spite of brave defence from Finley, Sam, James and Will, but then Tyler raced off past the half-way line, Billy almost made the line and Liam grabbed the ball and dived over.
Lambwath scored again, narrowing the gap, but then no-one could stop Finley as he sprinted the full length of the pitch to score for us again. As the game came to a close, Lambwath were not able to catch up. Will made an outstanding tackle to keep the Blues in front for the final whistle.
