Hull wyke under 9s turned up at Butlins with high hopes of shocking a few teams and they did just that by reaching the final and just getting beat by a last minute try.

The weekend started 1 day earlier with a game against Goldbourne Parkside pirates who provided stiff opposition but with big running forwards Elliot Johnson, Jay Kirby, and Fin Chapman Wyke made meters. This set up the platform for Lennie clark, Will Kirby, James Farrar, and Ryan Hall to score.

The next game was against Dearne Valley Bulldogs, we started the game strongly with big tackling from our outside backs Jacob Hill and Seb Hawtree the later who looks to have a good future at dummy half as he was magnificent all tournament in a new position to him. Tries from James, Jack Lawler, Lennie and Ben Johnson put this game to bed. And moved us on to the last game of the day against Thornhill Trojans this was a game we were very unlucky to lose as a few referee calls went against us but as coaches we were very proud the boys didn’t argue too much. Tries for this game went to Lennie x2 and Will.

This meant we had to go into the last group game against last year’s winners East Leeds on the Sunday having to win to go through to the main group finals. We did this in style in a bad tempered game with big work from forwards Elliot, Fin and Jack with Seb and Ben pushing us round the field. Also Ryan Halls tackling was brutal all tournament and this game was no different. So this victory meant Wyke had topped the group and had to play the best runners up in the semi-final which in a coincidence meant we were to play East Leeds again.

The semi-final started with a quick try to East Leeds which didn’t knock the players confidence as after a big run by Jacob Hill Wyke scored 4 tries, James x2, ryan, and will. This set off big celebrations from the Wyke parents and a lot of plaudits from the rugby am team who were watching the game.

So on to the final against Black Brook Royals who were a very well organised team, but Wyke played brilliantly and defended well but just lost out by that late try. Tries by Lennie and Ben finished our weekend of and second place out of 16 teams is no disgrace. All coaches and parents were proud of the boy’s effort.
All of hull Wyke did the club proud as the Ian Chessman’s under 10s also performed brilliantly. The behaviour of all at Butlins were a credit to the club.

This was a well organised event and one that is set to grow bigger each year. To see more of the events put on during the weekend tune in to Made in Leeds TV and watch Rugby AM for the full specticle.

Well done boys and here’s to the rest of the season.
